Alert

As information about public health measures associated with COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) emerges, we will post it here. Please check frequently for latest messages, updates, and useful links.

Central Okanagan Public Schools' top priority is always the safety of our staff and students. We continue to work closely with local and provincial health authorities to get the latest information and ensure we cooperate with any recommended measures for COVID-19.

We continue to educate on best practices for preventing the spread of viral illness, including frequent and thorough handwashing and encouraging people to stay home from school or work when they show symptoms.

School campuses will remain closed to visitors unless otherwise invited.

If you are an essential service worker (ESW) with a child aged 0-5, please see this news release from the Province of BC for information on how to connect with childcare.

The Government of BC declared a state of emergency and a public health emergency in order to exercise emergency powers such as cancelling gatherings of 50 or more people and enforce social distancing requirements for establishments.

British Columbians can now call 1-888-COVID19 or text 604-630-0300 for non-medical information on the virus, including topics such as travel recommendations and social distancing. The line will be manned by service representatives from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week, and information will be provided in more than 110 languages.

Update June 15

Videos will be showcased till the end of June and will include local celebrities; including singers, actors and sports players from throughout the province – the videos all share a special message for our 2020 B.C. graduates.

Update April 30
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry prepared a special video address to thank teachers, educational assistants and school staff for all their work during these unprecedented times. As we continue to flatten the COVID-19 curve in B.C., it is crucial that we maintain the supports established for the children of essential service workers and make sure we continue to expand the provision of in-person support for vulnerable students, and students with disabilities and diverse abilities.

Please view Dr. Henry's video.

Also, Dr. Bonnie Henry along with Minister of Education Rob Fleming, will answer questions from children about COVID-19 during a virtual town hall that will be live streamed on News 1130’s Facebook page from 1 to 2 pm on Saturday, May 2, 2020. Details about the event and instructions for children to submit questions can be found on City News and News 1130's website.

Warning

SURVEY CLOSES TONIGHT AT 12:00 A.M. (PST) Please click here for information and the link to the survey.

The District has been tasked to provide learning/childcare services to parents that have no other option for childcare, as well as meet the definition below as Essential Service Workers (ESW):

  • Tier 1: healthcare workers and emergency responders;
  • Tier 2: workers supporting vulnerable populations (e.g. social workers, income assistance workers); utilities workers and workers supporting key supply chain functions (e.g. grocery store workers, warehouse workers); and
  • Tier 3: teachers and childcare workers who do not have access to childcare and who are providing care or instruction to children of ESWs

ESWs that can make other arrangements for care with older siblings, partners or other relatives must do so to support the practice of social distancing. Please see below for an update on how the District will be proceeding with its mandate to provide childcare service for ESWs:

  • Childcare will only be provided for children from Kindergarten to grade 6.
  • If one or more of your children are older than grade 6 and will require childcare due to special needs, this will be assessed on a case by case basis by the school principal and District Student Support Services.
  • Childcare will be provided during the hours of 8:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday to Friday.
  • We will be endeavoring for this service to be provided in your neighbourhood school.
  • Should there be capacity issues and the District is not able to provide service to all parents that meet the ESW definition, the District will be prioritizing service based on the tiers, with Tier 1 workers taking priority. There may be further prioritization within Tier 1 under guidance from the Provincial Government and Health Authority.
  • If you are a School District staff member, it is our expectation that the majority of staff will be able to accommodate childcare for their children by working from home. If you work in a position where you cannot work from home, please let your school know when you are contacted next week.

You will be notified by April 3 about the status of childcare for your child(ren). This service will be phased in with priority service expected to commence on April 6.

As all efforts are being dedicated to finalizing plans for safety, learning/childcare for essential service workers and continuity of learning, we please ask that you do not contact the District or your school prior to April 6. You will be provided more details and your school will be in touch with you as soon as planning is completed.

If you have not done so already and believe that you would qualify for this service per above, please go to https://sd23survey.sd23.bc.ca/COVID-19-EW.aspx
